Ah... found it. It started as a race for Juniors, so it probably wouldn't appear in major sports periodicals.

This is from "Cycling 4 All"

"Gent-Wevelgem started on 9th September 1934 as a junior race over 120 km, as tribute to Gaston Rebry (who came from Wevelgem) and realized in 1934 the famous "double, i.e. winning the Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix in one year! In the following years the event was organized for juniors again in 1935 and for "independents" in the years 1936-1939. After World War II the event started again on 29th July 1945. On the initiative of cycling club "Het Vliegend Wiel" (= "the Flying Wheel") form a.o. Georges Matthijs a 200 km long race for professionals was held. In 1947 the "classic race" moved on the calendar to the spring period (March/April) and became one of the famous Belgian "spring classics". In the period 1957- 1959 the results of Gent- Wevelgem and the 'Omloop ‘Het Volk’ were combined in the "Trofee van Vlaanderen" (Trophy of Flanders). The most famous obstacles in this race, often also influenced by hard winds and rain in the open fields, are the Monteberg and the Kemmelberg (cobblestones!). Since 1945 Gent-Wevelgem is organized by a special committee in cooperation with the cyclingclub 'Het Vliegend Wiel' from Wevelgem. This organization-commitee was lead in 2005 by Luc Gheysens (Bel)."
