As I understand it and have been told, this was a feature to aid and abet moisture removal within the BB to exit said area. Is this one of the "thick cup" BB's? I'm hazy at this hour of night - but seem to recall being told that the "rifling" on the cups was only on the thick cup BB's. Hope this helps and hope for clarification and refinement if I'm in error.
