Jerry, you turn the handle above the chainset one way or the other and that moves the "clappers" on the chainstay. You do this while back pedaling. When I first mounted the mechanism I did not know about the need to back pedal and called Mike Barry for advice. He set me straight...or backwards as it was. It works....but not well. I would say another Rube Goldberg shifter when other, much more effective, French mechs were already available. Edward Albert Chappaqua, NY

Always loved the Umberto Dei tricolore color scheme. I wonder if these inspired the much more recent Gianni Motta paint schemes?
