My first Jim Redcay racing bike, circa 1974, had a different approach than drillium. Among the components was a prototype Nitto Pearl stem, with all alloy hardware and drilled up the middle. It also had an alloy Hatta Swan prototype headset, Hi-E hubs., Super Champion Arc-n-Ciels, first year Suntour Cyclone derailleurs, a Teledyne spindle, Sugino SL cranks, Bob Reedy pedals, alloy rail TTT saddle, Conti 240 gram tires (the good handmade ones), Dura-Ace brakes, TTT sl bars, Zeus alloy freewheel.

Lets just say I was a pretty focussed, in my way, eighteen year old.

19 lhonest bs. And stout. And at least my saddle had padding and leather. Boy was I blue when that got stolen a few years later.

+++++++++ It will not surprise those who know both Joe and me, but my mind wandered in similar direction, but we still have the same SuperVitus 979 frameset I built up for Beloved Spouse in 1973 or 74. Except Susan was lighter than Joe (of this I am sure), so we got away with SC Medaille d'Oro rims (260 gm?) on HiE hubs (front used HiE recessed aluminum spoke nipples), Jubilee derailleurs, Stronglight 63 cranks. Mafac plastic-bodied brake levers. Nylfor headset, nylon with nylon balls. Anything I could get for <$5/ounce saved. She drew the line and forced me to substitute Suntour Cyclone shift levers (70 gm) for the Simplex plastic (60 gm). Nice memories, Joe. And a super pink champagne to purple imron fade, by Les Lunas. I've brought it to Cirque at least once, and it is surprisingly inconspicuous.
