If the pads slid out, the brake shoes were installed backwards - that can happen on most classic brakes, including Campy.

As to the brakes squealing, that's part of the charm. I once bought a card of French-made "La Viper" replacement pads for Mafac brakes. The card proclaimed in French what I would translate as "The Pads that Squeal". Evidently, they were boasting that their pads squealed just like the genuine Mafacs. Ah, the French.

Also, the squeeling was my scream when the pad slid and I was left with the Flintstone stoppers (feet).

If I wanted something to work right out of the box I'd use Campy's. But where's the challenge in that?
