As someone else suggested and you imply below, sounds like the BB shell was improperly faced, i.e. too much material taken off the shell, or perhaps the BB had a manufacturing defect. Given Raleigh's less than stellar reputation for quality control, I rather suspect the former. Probably the lads at Nottingham had one pint too many at lunch. The bikes built at the former Carlton facility at Worksop were usually better, but I'm not sure the Supercourse was built at Worksup.

Under the circumstances, a spacer under the lockring may make sense. I believe the same spacers work for fixed cups or freewheels, and should work under the lockring.

Imagine the crook where the lug for the chain stay branches out of the trunk of the bb shell. The lug stems-out at a slight angle.

Now, in your mind's eye, Horatio, see your self tightening the lock ring and as the lock-ring contacts the face of the bb shell, the outer diameter of the lock-ring is making contact with that branched lug such that the lock-ring is augering into the lug. Contact is not limited to the face of the bb shell but additionally against the lug.

If Stronglight did not include a spacer-washer for the lock-ring then, maybe the bb shell was faced too low (improperly).

I suppose I will have to install an aluminum fixed cup spacer under the lock-ring. Rather have steel but aluminum is what I have.

I apologise for the nuisance; however, this is my first Stronglight so, I am on the learning curve to become gaul-vanized.

Lock-ring for the adjusting cup appears to bottom-out against the lugs of the bottom bracket shell. This insinuates doubts of the flush mating against the bb shell face.

Should a spacer-washer have been installed between the lock-ring and the bb shell? If yes then, I assume the spacer-washer would have been steel - perhaps chrome plated - rather than aluminum. To be honest, the lock-ring is beveled on one side which may provide the clearance. Although, wear patterns on the lock-ring do not give indication of the beveled side being installed against the bb shell. The opposite is indicated - wear pattern is worried into the flat, non-beveled side.

What did Messrs. Stronglight have in mind?

Comment, please.

Thank you.
