Hi, John---

Salty ocean air. The seller states that the bike lived by the ocean for several years. Like many things metal, if the bike was kept out (seemingly to no harm) in the lovely California weather, the combination of sun and especially salt could account for the damage. The loveliness of the weather can mask its insidious impact...

This part is pure speculation: Perhaps the bike was simply one of a chap's numerous toys and after some time he ceased riding it and paying much attention to it. Slowly but surely the damage crept in.... Or maybe he rode the heck out of it and simply accepted the toll the weather was taking. He may have cared about the bike, but if he's not a CR type, a bike may be simply something you use until it "wears out."

Cheers,
