Subject: [CR]Re: tandem lugs

The Gitane tandems I remember, and rode, in the 70's were lugged, but the tubes were standard size, as were the lugs...which made for a rather flexible frame....I remember riding behind one where whe tandem seemed to slither down the road! I think some tandems were strengthened with a lateral tube or a pair of small mixte diameter laterals. I believe my friends' Roberts was "firmed up" this way.I would think that using a larger diameter tube for building a tandem would have been easier if the frame were brazed, because tandem size/strength lugs would have been hard to find, if they were available at all... I think that all the original fenders for high end Italian bikes get snapped up quickly. Just keep an eye on Frejus fenders as they appear on eBay. They regularly go for $200.

Yowsa. Is that original or what! I remember selling a new one one shade darker in red. All the buyers were put off by the "crappy" Mafac brakes.

Bob and all,

Regarding toe straps on Carlsbad Masis; they were twisted and riveted,

just for the record. I assembled a few hundred myself.

Toe straps work fine either way; but I personally prefer the twisted

method.

I agree that is isn't necessary. I've often had to rely on a pair of

Anyway, how did they do it at Carlsbad? Straight or twisted? (BTW,

I'm

Carlsbad did it without a twist... because first thing Faliero would

have

done was show them how he had been doing it in Italy, as you see can

here (on

a new '72 Italian Masi being unwrapped for the first time). If you

look hard

you can also see what Chuck was talking about, how they looped and

riveted

the end.

Thanks for the info! I assumed Faliero would have done it in the US the way he'd been doing it in Italy. Or was it someone's idea at Carlsbad, do you remember?

That's "Belleri, France". On my examples, the "BF" is within a circular relief--but I have here two patterns, one with a faux "lugged" look at t he junction, the other is plainer. Both feature an exposed bolthead. Whe n you say 3" long, I imagine you refer to the extension; folks out there , don't forget that the usual way of expressing the measurement is "cent er-to-center". I believe it should be pronounced "bell -- ree" rather th an "bull-larry". I hope I've been helpful. Best Regards, Tom Ward New York, NY
