Joe

Can you pass the attached email round to as many in the club as poss.?

Sat 21st Oct is the final ever meeting at Eastway and it would be great if your club had some riders there. Can you ask anyone interested to contact Neil, Glenn or Myself? I am sure we could arrange transport for anyone if required, especially if we get plenty of people interested in going along to ride or support the event.

Cheers Alan

I'm promoting the final major event at Eastway on behalf of the Eastway Users' Group. It features an Elite race with National B status, plus a full support programme. Mountainbike racing dominates the afternoon.

I hope you will be able to spread the word to more people who can support the event by riding at it or coming along to help. Details below.

Evans Cycles Eastway Closure Finale Saturday 21st October 2006

Road and mountainbike races for Youth, Junior, Men & Women riders

A cycle racing event to commemorate the closure of Eastway cycling facility in East London

Eastway users are organising a final fling for London's best cycle sport facility before it closes to make way for the Olympic Park. Evans Cycles are sponsoring this major road and mountainbike event. The organisers welcome all riders to join in a celebration of over 30 years of cycle sport at Eastway.

Eastway has a mile-long closed road circuit and ample off-road riding trails inbetween Stratford and Hackney Marshes. It is home to some of the country's best riders and youth prospects in the popular sport of cycling. After nearly three years of campaigning to ensure a suitable replacement it looks as if users will be back on track but in about a year's time. The new facility at Hog Hill will be built by the London Development Agency during 2007 with a temporary road circuit in docklands and some off-road riding available in the meantime.

The event on Saturday 21st October is being organised by the Eastway Users Group in association with the Lee Valley Youth Cycle Club, Eastway Supporters' League and the Beastway Mountainbike Series. Evans Cycles has donated title sponsorship and prizes.

The day's events: Youth road racing in the morning will feature Lee Valley Youth CC members welcoming riders from all parts of the country for one final meeting on the country's best closed road circuit. Separate races for the youth categories from under 8 to under 16, with additional girl prizes should see some close racing.

Highlight of the Adult events is a 'National B' race for Elite, 1st and 2nd cat men and juniors, plus elite women riders. This is preceded by a 'Regional B' race for 3rd and 4th cat men, juniors and women. Elite riders will be very interested to secure those final 40 ranking points that are on offer as well as a chunk of prizemoney and cycle-related goodies donated by Evans Cycles.

Mountainbike racing starts just after 2pm with a short course event for riders aged under 12. A 30-minute youth race for riders aged 12 to 16 will be roaring around the trails and drops for which Eastway is famous, before the full-on 60-minute thrash of an adult Beastway event breathes its last.

A significant prize list is assured, based on the donation made by Evans Cycles. Meanwhile, the event organiser Michael Humphreys, who is also chair of Eastway Users Group is concerned to make sure that as much as possible of the riders' entry fees goes back to them in prizemoney. A set of combined prizes for the best rides in both road and off-road events will give added interest. More sponsorship and prize donations are very welcome.

About the organising clubs

LVYCC, ESL and Beastway have based their activities over many years at the Eastway Cycle Circuit. They bring riders into cycle sport, promote road races and mountainbike racing events.

For the remainder of 2006 and into late 2007, LVYCC will base itself at Highams Park School. Eastway Supporters League intends to run its road race promotions at an LDA site in Docklands. Beastway has yet to secure a confirmed venue for its 2007 summer season.

About Eastway

Eastway is a large public open space devoted solely to cycling. Sited between Stratford and Hackney Marshes in E London, it is where the Olympic Park is to be built. Since 2003 users were concerned to ensure a suitable relocation for a sport and recreation facility in the area most intended to benefit from the London Games. After long negotiations, and a campaign against the definite proposal to open a site by the M25 in Enfield, a more suitable site at Hog Hill in Hainault has finally been secured for users by the London Development Agency. This will see the road and off-road riding continue after a break during 2007 when the riders must disperse to find separate facilities suitable for youth, road and off-road riding. It is hoped that 2008 will see all events and club meetings back on track at Hog Hill, with youth and junior riders able to continue their preparation for 2012 and beyond.

Some of the country's best riders began their sport at Eastway, with no fewer than six national champions in off-road disciplines being seen in competition there this year. The Beastway series of cross-country races has seen the country's largest weekly turnout of racers for over ten years. It may be hard to believe that an East London facility has produced national champions in this discipline, but the quality of young riders coming through and the proven success of adults has to be seen to be believed.

Come and be part of the action.

Jenny Copnall, the GB national mountainbike cross country champion and Subaru Gary Fisher team member this year lent her name to the campaign to provide a suitable replacement for Eastway.

Britain's most recent cycling Olympic medallist, Bradley Wiggins started his riding at Eastway.

Olympic Planning background

The Eastway Users Group took concerns over continuity and sustainability for their sport to the Greater London Assembly, where Dee Doocey, the GLA chair of Culture, Media and Sport assisted its campaign for a suitable replacement. As recently as May 2006, Michael Humphreys, chair of the Eastway Users Group put Lord Coe under cross-examination at the Olympic Planning Inquiry. Shortly after this appearance, the London Development Agency acccepted users' proposal to relocate to Hog Hill. Over 30 months of campaigning finally produced the best outcome, though now there is a delay as plans are changed. The LDA is set to provide an interim road circuit in Docklands and to support off-road provision at a site in Redbridge. The Lee Valley Youth CC is relocating temporarily to Highams Park School, pending the LDA's completion of the new facility at Hog Hill in Hainault with the backing of Redbridge Borough.
