My experience is similar to Bruce's. I have a Jack Taylor, used for cross country touring, that has a NR front derailleur to a TA crank, that is 52/46/26(okay, so I'm old and tired) with a five speed in the rear that is 14-32. The NR front derailleur handles it with a little room to spare.

Cheers.
