Yes, it is quite a bit _cheaper_! Sort of like the 32 spoke scam, cut corners and call it a "feature!"

Actually, over-BB cable routing typically doesn't work well on mountain bikes, because the front derailer cage is liable to foul the cable running along the top of the chainstay, when the derailer is mounted low enough for good shifting with "microdrive" chainrings.
