Lou:

The earlier Soma advertised in Bicycling! magazine, I would guess in the late 70's.

I remember two ads: One showing the top model bicycle (in the style of Japanese bikes of the day it had black Dura-Ace matched with the pearl orange paint job that was also favored by Centurion and Takara), and the other showed a guy in a white tee-shirt riding a silver Soma bike. I theorize that the guy was chosen on the basis of a mild resemblance to Eddy Merckx.

I'll see if I can dig out the ads if no one beats me to it.

The combination of pearl orange and black looks pretty good. One of these days I'm gonna find me one of those old Centurian pros with the kitschy black plastic top-tube brake cable clips.
