Find your local British motorcycle shop and find out what the thread is. I'll bet it's cycle thread. Your big problem will finding a bottoming-or plug-tap but the shop might have one. Otherwise you might take a needle file, heat it and put a little hook on the end and use it to try to clean the threads out enough to thread the screw. I've done this but boy, it's a pain.
