Yes - indeed. Much as I love the modern 'technical' fabrics and all that can be done with them by a good screen printer, there is still a lot to be said for wool jerseys of the type Dale recalls. Lutz were the leading exponent of the craft at the time, and virtually cornered the UK market.

I think most of their UK output was in fact 'shrink proof' 'acrylic' wool, but you're quite right about the embroidery and the deep heavy ribbed cuffs and necks - and nothing quite smelt the same as a new jersey fresh out of the packet either. Don't get those thrills these days with Lycra...

Another thing I sorely miss are the 'box' style racing caps that I think Alisan and Beekay produced (one or either of the two made the "Carlton" logo ones that John Atkins wore for 'Cross for sure. They had a generous 'cut' and having a big noggin myself these were only ones that fitted me. None of the 6-panel beanie-hat jobbies fitted me - or still do!

Ah, the memories!

I remember our team unwrapping the freshly-arrived-from-England Lutz order, circa 1976 or 77.

Such luxuriously rich wool fabric, dyed deep colors and beautifully thick "braided rope" style embroidery! We were in heaven!
