I've been doing it for years without any trouble at all (on list bikes and off list bikes). Don't even use a shim/spacer to reduce the size of the valve hole.

If you are inclined toward shim/spacer - I have seen the rubber spacers - these are just rubber grommets a la hardware store. Also, I have one of the following yet, have never seen any others - it is a spacer that looks very much like the knurled circular nut for a threaded presta valve but, it was a wee shoulder for fitting into the Schraeder hole. Of course, it works with threaded and non-threaded prestas.
