there has been some good ideas generated here, and the nightmares.
I ship a fair amount of stuff being a furniture maker, including glass. one of the methods i use which is useful for rims are the inexpensive furring strips (2.5"x.75") used extensively in the US building trade. Basically, i construct a frame to surround the item using butt joints and glue, then glue and staple cardboard or screw Masonite on the top or
bottom. for bigger stuff i will use 2 bys.
It is really fast using an hydraulic nailer and stapler, takes about 10 minutes. lot lighter with cardboard..
