I have used a felt magic marker, swab the ramped surface and test install, filing away the area where the dye is not touched during test insertion... I read this thread with interest, because just yesterday i visited a few bicycle shops with my slide gauge in hands.. i found cotters of 7mm and 7.5mm too, as well as one in 8mm which i need for my Automoto project. Thanks for the tip with the filing, i wasn't aware of that :) thought already i had found one with the wrong pitch...

btw: can cotters be removed so that they can be re-used? i forever changed the flank lead on mine to a non-metric measure while extracting them the way my dad tought me once (with a large hammer)
