I always heard that in a serious crash a hairnet might help hold the pieces together to aid in identification of the body.
Does that count as a "merit"?
Certainly, you're no worse off than going bare-headed, but don't kid yourself that it's any better.
On a leisurely vintage bike ride, there might be some style points, but that's about it.
