FS Two vintage Claud Butler frames and various bits

Both Claud Butler frames were acquired four years ago from Bill Gray, one of the framebuilders in Claud's stable during the heyday. I bought them several years ago, before Bill passed away, through a friend, also a long time friend of Bill's. Bill kept a small shop--of sorts--in a boat yard, near Putney on the Thames. The shop and his house was a CB treasure trove with records and bits including several incomplete CB tandems which he probably started just before the receivers took over the CB holdings. Please note: these frames and parts are not restored and far from pristine and are sold AS-IS!!! I have described them as honestly and best as I can. The frames are worthy projects, but be sure of your interest before getting entangled.

I believe the first frame is a post war Hyperlite. I am not certain about the originality of the paint and transfers but Bill identified it as a Claud and dated it 1946, for what this is worth. It has forward facing stamped rear dropouts and nice cut/filed lugs. The size is 23 inches C-C. The fork blades are round with a Russ-like rake and Chater Lea cast "plug in" dropouts and a rather plain Chater Lea crown. The frame is a lightly pitted but not deep and definitely not rusted through anywhere. There is a small bulge in the seat tube near the BB shell, but otherwise the frame is in restorable shape. The frame has the old style brazeons for fenders on the seat stays and fork and a lamp boss on the fork as well. It is Claud's version of a Clubman. It includes the headset which was in it--not original and not really useable--and the BB set (cups and cottered spindle). The frame is stamped "British Made 41617 64/61 on the BB shell. The fork is stamped 14517 and is the matching number fork (BTW it uses a threaded headset). I am selling this frame for $140 plus shipping.

The second frame is also a Claud, or was identified by Bill as such. From researching the catalogs I think it is an Avant Coureur. It has gray primer over the vestiges of the original red paint--apparently Bill thought about restoring it. The seat lug is bilaminated seat lug and the others are all fancy cut lugs with especially nice long pointed lugs on the chain stay with brazing window cutouts. The size is 22 1/2 inches C-C. The dropouts are (stamped Cyclo) with a derailleur hanger. There are cable guide braze-ons on the bottom of the BB shell for front and rear derailleurs and the dropouts have fender tabs. Brake cable guides are on the underside of the top tube as well as the pump pegs. The front fork has a lamp boss with oval blades. The frame is stamped 4373 (I think the 43 is obscured by the cable guides) and 546. The fork is stamped 4373 and 545. BTW no BB or headset--could use period Campag or Gnutti or various English (Bayliss Wiley etc). I am selling this frame for $180 plus shipping.

The parts are as follows

1 pair of GB Coureur sidepull brakes (calipers) with GB levers (early pre hood design). These are useable but not cherry in any sense. Again these are for use! The price is $40 plus shipping for the set.

1 FB rear double threaded track hub. Alloy high flange, 40 hole. The chrome center section is peeled, but otherwise seems straight at useable. $40 plus shipping.

1 BH Airlite front hub. Alloy high flange, 32 hole (with one extra hole drilled on one side--go figure!). Chrome center section is peeling. Seems straight and useable though. $20 plus shipping.

1 pair of BSA fluted cottered cranks. 5 pin ring type. 6 1/2 inches C-C. Chrome is not bad, but not great. Again, for use, not show. $60 plus shipping.

1 Simplex "Type Rigidex 35" long cage rear derailleur (4v.ch.2,38). Very used but all there and still useable. No shifter or cable. $40 plus shipping.

I also have the original Simplex instruction sheets for various vintage derailleurs for sale, $10 each. Good Rebours drawings for display.

Please contact me off-list at aclong79@hotmail.com if interested. I have some pics of the frames and will gladly send them to potential buyers. Also, I live in the LA area and will deliver the frames locally for free, but check first before buying etc. I might even go as far south as San Diego and stop in to see Pergy and Brian....
