Never tried it, but it's 1" wide and probably wouldn't conform to handlebar curves without wrinkling. The friction tape I suggested is the same width common electrical tape (3/4"), but made of cotton and impregnated with a black, sticky substance. You would wrap the bars with it first and then wrap the twill cotton tape over it.
