Subject: [CR]MAFAC brake lever hoods

I have MAFAC "Competition" brakes from late 1970's, with full black rubber hoods which are finally disintegrating. They are okay on top, but the sides are cracking up where the material is thinnest. Should I try cutting them down into half-hoods? Are there any hoods of another make that are interchangeable? I'll use original or "correct" parts where I can, but there is a limit; I'm not running a museum.

There must be at least some level of demand for replacement MAFAC hoods, judging by the high prices commanded by the few remaining specimens. I wonder that some enterprising manufacturer doesn't whip out a production run, either generic or replica. The same could be said for the straddle cables.
