I still use acetylene lamps from time to time (buy my calcium carbide on line from a caving supply shop) and they do, indeed, throw a bright light, but it's a wide beam, not focused.

i have cycle accessory retailers' catalogues from 1920 onward, so if you can provide a photo, Barry, I may be able to identify it for you.
