Hi list members, I, and the people I rode with (1962-70), never used to strip the front & rear?derailleurs from a bike to swap over to riding a fixed-gear during winter. We all had hack frames (but steel!) for winter riding,?and would also have a set of wheels for this winter bike. For us it was a matter of cost - it was cheaper to buy a set of ready-built dished wheels and use the fixed side of the hub than to have a set of wheels built for only fixed. Btw DA in CTC parlance means District Association. The CTC is a national organisation but is organised into a group for each district.
