Subject: [CR]Wheel-Building Advice needed..

>From the information that Robin has given the List aboput the Baylis-Wiley double-fixed hubs and the 26 x1.25 Fiamme Yellow Label rims that he intends to use or this project, I a assume that the frame that they are going to be hung on is from the late 40s/early 50s period.

In those days the wheels generally used drillings of 32H for the front and 40 H for the rear, whereas Paul has a pair of 36H - quite unusual for Baylis-Wileys. The spokes we used were, as Alex Von Tutschek points out, always 15/17g..and usually chrome-plated. The lacings were generally 3X for the 32H front and 4X for the 40H rear, particularly for fixed gear wheels and touring ones. This applied to wheels whether they were 26", 27" or 700c. although most of the latter did come in 36H format.

36H hubs are generally built up with 3X spoking..so that might be better , in terms of appearance -unless Paul wishes to ensure that the back wheel is strong enough to carry his weight. In either case it might be a good idea to tie and solder them..a common enough practice back in the day.

As for spoke availability someone on the List might have a stash of Berg-Union chrome-plated spokes that they are keen to get rid of.
