As the proud owner of a ~'65 Sears Ted Williams Sport Racing (with "steel" Record rear and fronts), I'm in a poor position to comment on others' choices of the truly weird/woderful. With the combination of the Gran Trashmo and the plunger Gran sport, Mark's bike might take the prize for worst shifting since the Cambio Corsa. Help! This bike would totally out-funk me!
Actually, my respect for Campgranolo just went up a leeeetle bit: I hadn't thought about the fact that Campy made it so hard to use the GTrashmo on a high quality bike (one with integral derailleur hanger). Maybe it was a sign? :-)
But, if you're determined, here's one way to do it. Find something like an old Suntour hanger bolt that is threaded 10*1 mm. Cut to length needed, leaving the end with the hex head intact. Bore and thread this to match the C-bolt. Now you have an adapter, which should have a threaded portion just about the length of the thickness of the drop-out. In theory, if you can find the right tap, this would not require precision tooling; drill press should keep things vertical, and you aren't too concerned about centering.
Going to this much trouble for this application surely wins you nomination to funkmeister of the year.

I had finally figured out what to do with a mid level (at best), approx.
1970 Torpado road bike that I got from Matteo, some years ago. It is
orange,
with long Campy dropouts. My new scheme is to use a nice honkin' Gran
Turismo
rear, Gran Sport front, bar end shifters, weighty Campy steel three arm
crank, and other appropriate items for the theme. Great. The problem
is that the
rear unit I have is pre-mounted to a black steel hanger, with the
beautiful
red-C'd bolt ... that has threading significantly smaller than the
mounting
hole in the dropout.
I've looked at every single Campy bolt I have in all the misc
derailleurs in
my collection, and not one will serve as a substitute, due to the extra
wide
sleeve on the derailleur that the bolt must travel through and clear.
Every
bolt is simply too short.
Now, I really had my heart set on seeing that red C on the completed
bike.
Is there a proper fitting red-C bolt available that threads into the
dropout?
Can I possibly just go ahead and mount the unit USING the black steel
Campy
hanger, even though the dropout has one too? I doubt this highly, as
there
would be no room for the hardware on the back side of the unit ... it
would
awkwardly push off the face of the dropout; true or false? I'm willing
to let
go of using the red-C bolt if no proper fitting one can be had, but what
else then? If I have to omit the GT rear from the project completely,
then I'm
gonna scrap it, and go back to the drawing board.
Any ideas? Any experience? Anyone got a red-C bolt that threads into a
Campy dropout, for sale ... please? Thanks so much!!!
