There is a third way to do it if you can't take friction shifters. It is to use friction shifters with a index type freewheel, the one with the slightly twisted or "engineered" teeth. My experience is that a nudge of your shifter lever will give you a very positive change, maybe sometimes a little noisy, but pretty failsafe. Just my experience from trying different things. I have a bike set up like this, the changes are as fast and positive as indexing after a few days riding. And if you don't like it, you can always move "up" to index levers, your frewheel is already on. Nick March, Agen, 47, France
