I suspect the "rainbow" term came from trying to distinguish riders with different significant jerseys on, like the "Yellow Jersey" or the "Poka dot" jersey; the rainbow jersey is the world champion. National champio ns from each country wear their colors and are recognized as wearing the jersey of the Nationial Champion of whatever event. I think the "rainbo w jersey" is easier than the "blue,red,black,yellow,green, on a white ba ckground, jersey.

Just my thoughts.

mistakenly used to describe any series of colored stripes.
