Someone mentioned "honking rubbers" to describe rubber brake hoods. Back in the early 1950s only a few brake levers had rubber inserts and you would normally just run the handlebar tape up on the brake bodies. But you could also buy accessory rubber hoods. "Honking" was climbing hills out of the saddle with your hands on the brake hoods.
