I think the first generation Competitions you describe first began to appear on PX-10's and equivalent French bikes in the US market in the early/mid 70's, probably sometime from 1973 to 1975. They did look a lot like Racers, except I think even the first Competitions had a different straddle cable from Racers. Not really a good change in my opinion, as one could cut off a frayed brake cable and use it as a replacement for a Racer straddle cable, which I always found rather handy.
