I also think we cannot generalize about build quality. Raleigh was probably putting out more 531 frames than most other builders combined. We could also say this about lugged frames in general. During the boom years lots of bikes were built that make us cringe today. Comparisons between "production"Pro type bikes and those built in low volume are comparing Apples to Oranges. The arrival of the volume built bicycles from Japan changed a lot of things but even they only saw a file on the top end bikes.
