I received this very nice message from Mitzi:

"This is Mitzi, the much, much better half of Brandon "monkeyman" ? Ives. He's off in the depths of this or that national park, but ? suggested I tell you about a thing so that perhaps you can post an ? announcement to the classics list .... In any case, while in Ghent we picked up a pile of old Tour-coverage comics that originally ? printed in Belgian newspapers, and thought it might be cool to post some of them.

.... I'll post a new "55th anniversary" cartoon from each day of the 1953 tour with ? translation of the text (these 1953 ones were done by one Marc Sleen, ? one of the most popular Belgian comic strip artists of the old days, ? ridiculously famous in Flanders). I think he actually did strips for ? the Tour every year between 1947 and 1965, so he was sort of the Phil ? Liggett of the comics page.

In any case, here's a link ..... I might get around to annotating with some ? tidbits from the tour history that year (1st use of the green jersey, ? I believe, etc, plus maybe a tad on some of the racers mentioned ? (Sleen likes to throw in puns on the colorful names of the Flemish ? and Dutch racers).

Bike racing! Comics! How more Belgian can one get? (crack open a ? strong beer and get some fries?)

Thanks! Mitzi, Mrs Monkeyman"
