It looks like a Gran Premio from the early to late 60's to me. The chromed stays and Campy drops are correct for that model. They only cheaped out on the forks which had stamped drops.

You can be certain it's not a Roma by the seat-stay attachment and chunky lugs. Not that Roma's were artistic by any means but they are much nicer finished than that, and the seat-stay tops were "let-in" with mitres to the seat-tube.

Mark, I have a black/chrome Gran Premio fork and original headset but it might be a bit small for your frame. I bought a complete sawed-off front end off one of these bikes to get the badge for a Roma. But it was a very small frame, maybe a 20", 21" at best. measure your headtube and email me offlist if you are interested.

Also, looking at the close-up of the top headlug, it appears your frame may be bent form a front end collision. Something you should look at before diving too far into this one.

The brass headbadge and the signature Legnano seatpost clamp put it in the 70's or earlier. Looks more like 60's to me. The lug pattern looks very simple, almost crude, which at first made me think it was a Gran Premio, but I'm not sure if the Gran Premio had chromed ends or quality forged (Campy?) DO's with integrated RD hanger. The bike could easily be early 60's, but a Gran Premio that age would have a cottered steel crank, so if the 151 BCD Campy Record crank is original, I'd guess this most be an early 60's Tipo Roma.

I'll try this post again, after the last version of it came out almost unreadable...it doesn't seem to like me sending from webmail.

A battered and abused Legnano followed me home, and I'd appreciate any hints on ID and age: Serial # FT2801

http://picasaweb.google.com/MarkABattley/Legnano

In addition to being painted black (including the headset), and no longer having its original fork (shame), it's a random mix of components from a Campagnolo Gran Sport front hub through to a Shimano Tourney rear brake, with various era Suntour and Simplex thrown in to add to the confusion...

Campagnolo parts include: -Crankset: Record 151 BCD, 57/48 chainrings, no lips at pedals, so 1962-1966?? -Shift levers: "closed C", although has a funky extra clip at the base of the RH lever?? (http://picasaweb.google.com/MarkABattley/Legnano/photo#5230380462368844578) -Headset(?) -Front hub: 3 piece Gran Sport(?) high flange 32 spoke

Otherwise, and of limited dating help, it has: -Suntour FD -Simplex RD -Shimano brake levers -Mis-matched 27" alloy clinchers -Unknown ID steel double sided rear hub, 40 spoke, has "Whitedak" (or similar) hand scratched into shell -ALPS alloy stem, steel handlebars(?) -Classy foam handle bar grip....

Is early 60s to fit with the crankset plausible?

Thanks,
