I decided to strip the suicide levers from my Schwinn Sports Tourer since I never used them and I'm not ready for suicide anyway. I found that the lever body can be reattached fairly easily to the clamp that's under handlebar tape by taking a short piece of soft cord (like sash cord) and stuffing it betweeen the bar and the hooked piece that the attaching bolt goes thru. Once the bolt is started, the clamp won't fall apart and the cord can be pulled out easily.
