Wayne:

Thanks for the feedback. You may be right about it being an '84 model. From what I've seen, that was the last 770 to have the 531Pro tubing; the pink model used 531C tubing.

I've been a frequent visitor to the Vintage Trek website. This makes my third vintage Trek bike: I have a 760 frame in the blue/ white fade equipped with early 70's Nuovo Record bits, a mid-80's 760 in the famed purple sparkle finish, and now the 770 (now if I could only get my hands on a 970 or 170).

My last rebuild prior to this 770 was an '84 Dave Moulton Fuso frame built up with Super Record goodies I culled from another 770 bike I came across about a year-and-a-half ago. That one was a 58cm frame (WAY too big for me) that was pretty thrashed. It looked like to bike had been out in the rain for a few years. The stem was galvanized to the steerer tube and, after my LBS gave up on removing it, I had to opt for Jobst Brandt's last ditch effort of cutting the stem out from the inside. The components took me awhile to bring back to their shiny glory, but the effort was worthwhile. I also built up a light set of tubular wheels using a set of Fiamme Ergal rims. All and all another sweet ride: decisions decisions!
