Yes, somehow I ended up with a rear hub with broken flange, that looks to have started in just the same way you described. No idea how it happened exactly, as I received it that way ... quite a novelty piece! I took photos, and listed it on Ebay as an April Fools Day joke. Here is a link to the ended auction:

I got back from a ride the other day, and when I put my bike away I noticed a crack in a segment of the rear hub flange!
This is a large flange hub, and the crack starts at one of the spoke holes that is over the cut-out in the flange. On the drive side. The crack is through the entire segment, not just the part from the spoke-hole to the outer edge, but the entire segment is cracked.
I don't know the history of this wheel, but it is true, and does not seem over-built in any way.
Is this unusual for a NR hub? Anyone else have this occur? I assume it should not be ridden?
Just wondering what people's experience with this is. It of course brings to mind the catstrophic failure photo of the sheriff star hub.
