Subject: [CR]Vintage Shimano drivetrain help?

I have a mid seventies Austro Daimler with Shimano Dura Ace and 5 speed. the freewheel was rerplaced at some point with a suntour winner 13-28 5 speed. I am having trouble in the 13 tooth gear with skipping out. All the limit screws are OK and I've checked and fixed chain length per Sheldon Brown's website. The derailer allignment seems OK and the freewheel is virtually new...any ideas? Its weird as it is only in the 13 tooth gear....

Davis,

For 10 years, the "babe quotient was never an issue or a need at Cirque du Cyclisime. If that is what you think we need to make Cirque more fun, then you don't get it. I shared you post with my wife and she thought your comment on point 6 was needless, sexist, and offending so I am calling you on it.

To get pads for my Modolo Brake pads holders I took some new Campagnolo record pads and made them into Modolo brake pads. I curved the end with a file to match Modolo. Than on the bottom I cut a notch to match Modolo notch. Than I inserted the pads and drilled a hole in pad has Modolo brake pad bolt goes into pad a little bit. Why you don't wind up when pads are worn exposing bolt end I am not sure. I found easy to get Campagnolo pads but not Modolo pads It worked great . Charles Nighbor Walnut Creek, CA

A sincere thank you to MJ and Wayne for running an excellent Cirque; they had big shoes to fill after Dale's, and they certainly walked well in them on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The other volounteers deserve a thank you also: Lou, Michael, Harvey, John, Gabriel, many others who helped in unnoticed ways, and those who dismantled on Sunday.

The venue of the hotel worked well, better I think than changing locations for the Greensboro, but as someone mentioned, I did miss seeing Dale's store again. That, however, was compensated by the array of bikes in the lobby and hallway leading to the conference rooms. I thought the presentations were worthwhile. The number of vendors at the swap seemed smaller than at Greensboro, but this is the first time. I liked the arrangement of the two buildings, in particular, I liked the perimeter of the show bikes having the vendors around the "corral" show bikes.

As others have mentioned, the heat tooks some of the spunk out of it.

Beyond the friendships renewed and new friends made, however, what I liked the most about this year's cirque is the younger folks, particularly the younger frame builders, there. They appear--at least measured by their work on display--that they have the skills and vision to turn a tradition that came close to dying at one point into one one that not only will survive but can thrive.

Thanks to everyone there, and in particular once again thank you to MJ and Wayne and the host of volunteers. Dreams of another leather skinned Colonago and another ride on Harvey's Alenax are beginning to form for 2009.

Cheers.

Friends and Mr. Schmidt:

I have received my share of comments OL concerning my 'sexist' comments. It was done in humor and without any malevolence--so my apologies to those offended I would add that I made no reference to Phil Spector and his gay lover Dr. Evil from the Mike Myers movies. Hard to tell who was pitching and who was catching although I'd suspect Dr. Evil does the mound work. I guess it was sexist of me to leave the boys team out in the cold.

Let me further clarify....I have no problem with young people showing their stuff and being proud. My comments on topic # 4 had to do with fellas obviously higher than a U2 plane on marijuana or some equivalent. Why drive all the way across country in a multi-colored VW microbus just to smoke doobs and huff ether?

Lastly....my apologies to daisy duke and the daft dutch girl......if anyone would like to punch me in the face, I am available all day today and part of the day tomorrow for such bawdy roughhousing.

I heartily concur - but no way I'm hoisting my carcass onto the Alenax. That just looks scary.

In hopes of keeping out of Dale's dog house for sending an atta-boy, I'd like to ask two questions.

I took pictures of all the bikes that were on display at the time I went around the hall. I haven't looked at the full sized images yet, but the camera usually gives pictures that show well online. I'm pretty certain it would blow the monthly file size limit on Flickr, and I hesitate to throw a couple hundred pictures onto Wool jersey. Any suggestions on a more appropriate place to put them?

Second question/statement. As great as Cirque was, I'm certain I'm not the only person who has a suggestion or two on how to make it even better. I have no intention of getting into that discussion right on the list, but I'd like to suggest that collecting thoughts while things are still fresh in everyone's mind might be a good thing to do. I have no intention of usurping authority from Wayne or others, but if the powers that be would like a hand collecting ideas, I'd be willing to help out.

It was great to see old friends and acquaintances, and make even more this year. This is my 2nd time, and I actually felt a lot more a part of the group, thanks in large part to all the wonderful people in attendance. What a wonderful community we share.

Thanks Dale and Wayne (and many others),
