That's a very interesting idea and I can't see why it wouldn't work perfectly. The only problem I see is finding the right size heat shrink tubing and remembering to slide it up over the bar before you begin. You'd also have to completely remove the levers.

What I do is secure the ends of the bar tape with superglue before wrapping with the end tape provided (or electrical tape if I'm de-doing the job.)
