The People's Bike and tool on Hayes Street near the Panhandle in San Francisco changed it's name in the late 70's to the Freewheel. The owner and original dreamer of a collectivist bike shop where people could learn to fix their own bikes was Jerry Walker. He unfortunately passed away in May of 1993 of AIDS. I lost touch with him but always imagined that he was still running the shop, listening to country western music and jawboning about old steel. That is not the case as I just found out by calling the shop. The new shop still teaches mechanics but they also sell a whole bunch of modern bikes too. Life goes on after you die apparently, but the memories can survive in the hands and legs of those can still appreciate our beloved old bikes.
