"I don't know why this German colors story keeps getting passed around, but I'll do what I can to cast doubt on it again. German colors would be, from top to bottom, black, red, yellow. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/europe/germany/flag/ Some white Pros had red, black, yellow seat tube bands, BUT that's a different sequence."

Well those ARE the German colours (trust me, we Kohlers know at least that

much!) but yes out of sequence. Possibly because Raleigh thought the Raleigh crest would look better on a black background not red? And not entirely disproven until someone produces a photo of the German cycling team in the 1968 Olympics so we can determine 1) their cycle livery and b)

if they really were riding Raleighs. But the gold-yellow on my Raleigh i s hardly a colour one would just pick cause it's pretty.

As for Raleighs and dates, tis a fool's errand indeed. Why do you think Raleigh never put dates on most of their catalogues and devised these arcane Enigma code-esque serial nos. in the first place?

Finally, I have indeed established a Yahoo Group devoted to the Carlton-Raleigh Professional series. The main purpose of which is the creation of a database for frame nos. Yahoo Groups is unique in providin g this easy to use and maintain feature which I think is the essential way t o really document all of this:
