All the chat regarding Jean Robic's bike has given me a great "chuckle", not the letters or the bike, but something else.

As I was awaiting leaving home to report for National Service with the Royal Armoured Corps in 1956 at Catterick Camp, We, a bunch of young lads, entered a Road Racing event near Lille in Northern France...anyway, I must of done something special during the event because at the finish, as the prize-giving was about to start, I was ushered up to the stage,A portly gentleman in a funny hat approached ( I guessed correctly that he was the Mayor ) and handed me a jersey saying in broken English " This is the Jersey of Jean Robic"...to which I replied in broken French " Then you need to give it back to him because it's too small for me ", the crowd roared with laughter, all except me because I left without a prize...I remember it was an all wool jersey with pockets front and back and in the French National tricolour colours...oh! Happy Days and thank you Norris.
