Well, in one respect the Super Sport is a better bike than a UO-8 in that it has a fillet brazed Chrome-Moly frame, while the UO-8 is (lugged) carbon steel. The components are of about equal quality overall, except that the Super Sport had alloy rims while early 70's UO-8's had Rigida steel rims. Early 70's UO-8's had inexpensive cottered steel cranks. The Ashtabula steel cranks on the Super Sport were probably even heavier, but virtually indestructable and much easier to service.

We had several threads about the fillet brazed Schwinns last year in which I participated as I last year bought a Sports Tourer and a Super Sport to add to the Superior I had bought in 2007. It was observed then that the fillet brazed Schwinns seemed to have been "discovered" and were bringing much higher prices than they had a few years ago. This latest auction is just a continuation of that trend, and considering the prime condition of this bike, I wouldn't have been too surprised at that price a year ago, although I am somewhat surprised the market for these bikes seems unfazed by the worst recession in 75 years.
