kurt,

WOW! That's far more than I would have guessed!

Here's a breakdown of the most common square ended spindle sizes during the 1970's and 80's from Sutherland's (parenthesis mine) :

113mm Track single 118mm Road double for 68mm wide BBs 120mm Road double (probably for 70mm Italian BBs) 121mm Road double (Peugeot special ?) 123mm Road double (and triple?) 125mm Road triple 126mm Road triple (Peugeot special ?) 130mm Tandem double 133mm Tandem triple 134.5mm MTB

I've used 118mm most of the time for doubles and 123mm for triples on French and British bikes without any problems.

The ring code markings on the cups and lock rings were not always consistent. For example I have several Swiss LH threaded fixed cups with standard French markings and at least 1 British fixed cup with French markings.

Keep thread thread pitch gages and a micrometer handy. ;-)

BTW, we used to replace Stronglight BBs with TA BBs because they were better quality, ran smoother and lasted longer.

Here's Sheldon Brown's R.I.P. TA BB chart:
