Subject: [CR] Nitrocellulose lacquer

Not sure how this thread on nitrocellulose lacquer got started but it's main use today is by  high-end furniture manufacturers and builders of fretted stringed musical instruments (guitars/banjos/mandolins).  It's pretty much agreed upon that the best nitrocellulose for wood is made by McFadden (used by Martin, Gibson, Fender, Taylor and numerous custom instrument builders).  Nitrocellulose is nasty stuff and proper precautions must be taken.  The nice thing about nitro is that it darkens as it ages, giving an item a nice golden/amber patina.

To my knowledge, DuPont only makes very limited amounts of acrylic lacquer these days, although they might have discontinued production entirely.  They no longer make nitrocellulose.  You can spray clear nitro over acrylic if proper precautions are taken.  There are a few website geared towards the automotive trade that promise they can match any automotive color in spray cans of nitrocellulose, but I have no idea of the quality of these products.

To anyone thinking of spraying any lacquer, DON'T SPRAY IT INSIDE WITHOUT A PROPER SPRAY BOOTH WITH VENTILATION.  Make sure you always wear a mask for protection from the fumes also.
