Basically, the difference comes down to width.... Both rims feature double eyelets as well as MAVIC's proprietary CD (...or Couche Dure) hard anodized surface treatment. However, MAVIC G40 rims (...which debuted in 1982) measure 19.8 mm in overall width inasmuch as they were intended for narrow type racing oriented clincher tires whereas MAVIC MA40 rims (...which debuted in 1986 and which are based upon the exact same extrusion as the venerable MAVIC MA2) have a 20.5 mm overall width suitable for 19 mm to 25 mm clincher tires.
