I am planning a post with a number of questions regarding my rebuild of a PX-10,
but you have jumped on one of my questions regarding the ID. Mine has five
digits 68193 that appear to have been in there before paint and the paint
appears to be very much original.

It was my understanding that Peugeot only used the metal strip tags for a relatively short period, no?
After about 10 hours of searching every image I could find on the web and especially considering the various brochures and catalogs published on the web, I am convinced mine is certainly a PX10 and probably 1969 +/- a year. The five digit serial number is said to be indicative of 50's vintage, but the components, frame, paint and decals speak of late 60s.
I was hoping we might distinguish PX-10 from PX-10 E from PX-10 LE. It seems the LE was introduced with the 74 imports, but not sure. Once the E was introduced, did the PX-10 disappear?
My stem, handlebar, and pedals are nice, but not original as are the seat and seat post, but the rims, hubs, brakes, derailleurs, shifters, quick release, headset, and crank assembly all appear to be original. There is a vintage replacement Dura-ace freewheel.

The reason that serial numbers stamped into the BB of a 60s or 70s PX-10 make no overall sense is that they were not put there by the factory. The factory used a short metal strip with a number on it, riveted to the BB shell. ...
