Rereading the original article, it appears I may have overstated the connection between the acquisition of custom frames by 7-Eleven Team members and the problems with the True Temper frames. In any case, the breakage problems are pretty much fact: Ben Serotta describes as many as 10 broken frames during the first spring the team used the True Temper tubing, and Ron Keifel mentions finishing a descent in Italy with his frame barely in one piece. So maybe Roger wasn’t entirely in the loop … Here’s the link to the original article in RBA: http://www.roadbikeaction.com/fly.aspx?layout=content&taxid=96&cid=75 Ed GrangerLancaster, Pennsylvania, USA_____________________________________________________________________________“So I too sought to get to the bottom of this, and asked Roger Young, who rode on the track and on the road for 7-11. Here is his response regarding the construction of the Murray and Huffy bikes:*******************"The 7-Eleven track bikes were branded Murray. Huffy was on the bikes of the Raleigh Team. Rossin made the first track bikes for the team, then when Murray became the sponsor Ben Serotta made the bikes for 1984. Connie Paraskevin's bike was made by Eddy Merckx. Curt Harnett's bike was a Gardin. We never had trouble with the True Temper tubing, though we did find some experimental designs did not endure well, but with corrections we never had problems in competition and no one had a mishap that caused any injury. I did ride the bikes and never had any trouble at all myself."Here is a link to a picture of Roger when he rode for 7-11 (second picture down). http://www.jamieswan.net/pages/scrapbook/scrapbook08.html. He now lives nearby and I have the pleasure of riding with him just about every Friday....Stephan Andranian”
