I came across this once when I noticed that the cranks on a bike I was inspecting with a view to purchase had mismatched dates by one year.  The person selling the bike assured me they were the original cranks.  I knew him to be a person of some integrity and I believe what he said.  In this case it seems to me more likely the bike manufacturer (a low volume producer) was responsible.  I presume that the parts would have been supplied boxed as components rather than as groupsets and that parts would have been withdrawn in batches from stores as they were required.  There was likely not much control over how long each box was in the stores.  With several boxes open simultaneously, in a not very rigorous production environment, it is quite conceivable that mix-ups would occur. All. I recently picked up a SR equipped bicycle with a set of mismatched campy cranks. The drive side is dated 1982 and the non is dated 1980. The original owner swears that they have never been changed or replaced and that the cranks are what was originally on it when it was purchased new in Italy.

It seems to me that with components so close In years that it is possible that campy could have sold mismatched sets to clear out old stock.

Does anyone know if this is the case? Did campy ever sell grouppos with components from different years?
