I've had some success just polishing the pits out with crocus cloth, or superfine emery since the races are not that hard.
Another old trick was assembling with the old bearings and valve lapping compound instead of grease. Swivel for a time, disassemble, clean. Assemble with new balls & fresh grease, & you are good to go...
