Just got back from a business trip and have checked my completely-stock '71 Paramount's rims.
Mine are Weinmann, with Clement 50 (red label) tubulars mounted. The logos on the rims were not tagged as Schwinn-Approved, but had the rectangular Weinmann world champion logo. I don't think my rims are the wood-filled upgrade model, but the tires have never been off the rims for me to peek inside.
The bike came with a bonus set of Clement Campianato Del Mundo Seta tires, which were beautifully preserved in a paper bag from the dealership. Seriously.
Ok, I just peeled a tire back a little way and encountered a mystery. The tire-gluing surface has been machined in an odd way I've never seen before. The nipple ends, some of which were clearly protruding into the tire seating area, have been machined to flush. The machining marks are circumfrential, as if the wheel was run through a machine to turn or grind the nipples down to flush. In some cases, the spoke itself has been also been hit. In some cases, the machining results in a totally-smooth "o-shape" and in other cases you can still see the slot you find on that face of some spokes.
What's this all about? Anybody see it before? How was it done?

As I posted previously, I have a 1971 Paramount P-13 road racer, bought from Sam Ftizsimmons several Cirques ago, which I want to finally get sorted out.
Both wheels are incorrect. I intend to build correct wheels with Campy NR large flange hubs. What tubular rims were used on Paramount P-13 in the early 70's? My 1972 has Mavic Championnat du Monde, but I think there are probably several other rims that could be correct. SuperChampion Arc-en-Ciel perhaps? What do all you early 70's Paramount owners have?
