Good Morning Mike.

As an experienced "unorganized" rider, I had a few thoughts on your post.

For the bike's I use for commuting, I use common parts. I find that the plastic fenders work just as well as the expensive ones, and I don't feel to bad about then getting used up. Since the bikes are often locked up at different spots around town, I don't want to temp the local bike thieves by putting expensive parts in there view. Around here they are busy enough as it is.

Over the years I have had good luck with JADD sport racks and bags. They are good products at good prices, and I am very happy with them. Again, your just going to work, and function is more important than appearance.

I would also suggest that you call the local roads Dept. and ask if they salt the roads in the winter. It would be a shame if your nice touring bikes suffered from rust just going to and from work.

If your roads are salted, you may want to considered commuting on a 1980' or early 1990,s MTB. These bikes were well deigned and well built, parts and common and cheap, and there are plenty of good deals on the internet. They aren't as interesting, but they get the job done.

Well, from what I have heard (and have no intention of seeing) about the midwest winters, my hat is off to you. Best of luck.

An unorganized ride would be one that did not have fruit and cookies at every five miles with a support crew to pick you up if you could not make your destination and or change your flat too.
